MENU

German cuisine consists of the many different local and regional cuisines of Germany. Pork, beef, and poultry are the main varieties of meat, with pork the most popular, often eaten in sausage form — more than 1,500 different types of sausage are made in Germany. Bread is a significant part of German cuisine, with around 600 main types, and German bakeries offer some 3,000 kinds of pastries and cakes. Potatoes, cabbage, and root vegetables feature heavily, as do dumplings and noodles like spätzle, a specialty of the southwest. Popular condiments include mustard and horseradish, and beer and wine are the classic accompaniments to a German meal. Desserts range from apple, plum, and cherry cakes to cheesecakes and the famous Black Forest gateau.
