Grenadian cuisine reflects the island’s nickname, the Spice Isle — Grenada is one of the world’s largest producers of nutmeg and mace, and cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and turmeric season everything from stews to desserts. The national dish, oil down, is a hearty one-pot stew of breadfruit, salted meat, dumplings, and callaloo simmered in coconut milk and turmeric. Everyday meals lean on rice and peas, ground provisions, plantains, and fresh seafood, while pelau — chicken and rice cooked down with pigeon peas and caramelized sugar — is a beloved one-pot staple shared across the southern Caribbean. Cocoa also thrives on the island, and nutmeg is so central to Grenadian life that it appears on the national flag. Sorrel drink, brewed from hibiscus petals, and nutmeg ice cream are favorite ways to finish a meal.
